John Ascuaga's Nugget - Sparks, NV on October 10, 11 and 12, 1998

Day 3 Monday...Today started out pretty much like all the others, we took a walk around the casino so I could take pictures of Marty's name on the signs. They had a big marquee in the front of the hotel that flashed all kind of info about who's going to appear when and how much money they had returned in payouts. A big splash of color that looked like fireworks came on before Marty's name. I climbed up on a big cement flower box to take a picture and Steve and Gregg walked by and smiled, I about fell off, I'm klutzie that way!

It was a little chilly so I had on my Marty jacket and, as I was climbing down, I felt something pulling on my sleeve. I turned around and this little old lady said, "Are you with Marty Stuart's band?" I said "No, I'm in the fan club." She said, "Well is he any good? We're lookin for a show to go to." Now here I am In a jacket with his logo and autograph on it and I'm going to say he's no good! I think not. I ended up telling her more then she needed to know but it worked cause I saw her later that night at the show!

We went in and gambled a little more but my luck had run out. I was givin' to them instead of them givin' to me and it's not nearly as much fun! Deanna had to leave that morning so Heather and I made plans to meet at 6. Our little group had now gone down to 2. We got in line and another little old lady and her husband were behind us. I don't know what it is about me but old folks and dogs always seem to single me out! They were real nice folks from Oregon. They had been to fan fair a few times and met Marty at his booth but had never seen a show. They were 76 and 80 and wanted to come see him because "He's such a nice young man."

We went in and got our usual table 61. [grease works every time!] I looked around for the older couple and saw they were way in the back, so I went up and asked them to sit with us, They got so excited! They wanted to but didn't think the gentleman could get down the steps. They thanked me and said I was good people. I wanted to see them after the show but wasn't able to find them. I hope they had a good time.

Well the show started on time and you know the drill...elephants, goobers, magic and jokes and MARTY!!!! He was feeling lots better and his voice was excellent! All the TLC he was givin' it must have worked. Of all the shows this was the best. He was on fire! The guys were in black again and Marty wore a black suit, white shirt with black designs up the front and white stitches on the jacket.

He opened with "Doin' My Time," "Little Things" and "Blue Train. He asked if anyone had won anything and Heather said she had and he said "Put the light on her." When they did, he said "Will you adopt us?" He said "I won today too, I won that dang elephant" He did "Tempted," "Hobo's Prayer," "Country Girls," and "Red Red Wine and Cheatin' Songs." He told the Clinton joke again and how in his hometown they had put casino's on the Indian reservations. He said that Tony Brown was in the crowd again. Then he said, "Touch Me.....Turn Me On....Tony Brown ain't you glad we recorded this one?" and really went nuts hoppin' and doin' that Marty strut! Then he did "Now That's Country" and "Lonesome Pilgrim." Someone asked for "Western Girls" and he said "We'll do it, but not now." Someone else yelled out " How's Connie?" Marty said "She's ALRIGHT!" Then he said "You all need a good woman." Then he did "Can't Help Falling In Love," some outstanding bluegrass pickin' and "Hillbilly Rock." There was no encore or M/G, but he gave all he had and I loved every second of it!!

As we left Tony Brown was sitting by the bar. I think he was listening to the crowd's comments, at least I hope so. My husband was waiting out front for us and he said folks were just ravin' about how great Marty was and how fantastic the show was. Maybe if Tony heard it, he'll start to really promote Marty and finally give him the recognition he so rightly deserves!!! Mike, Spike, and Brad were at the bar when we walked by and said hi and asked if we enjoyed the show. I guess they couldn't tell by the grin on our face!

We walked around a little and played a few slots. We pooled our money together and poked the buttons and pulled the lever at the same time and yelled "MARTY MONEY" at the same time but we didn't win. People thought we were nuts but we had a great time doin' it! We said goodnight and promised to keep in touch. Heather was so great to me, and I'm so glad to have met her. My Marty adventures have brought me so much joy and, I hope, lasting friendships with so many great people. I am proud to be a Marty Stuart fan and to be a part of so many MARTYACS!!!!! I hope you all enjoy this as much as I did, and I hope the next adventure we can all be there together!

[Note from Sherry: Sheila spent a lot of time working on her review and I hope you enjoyed reading it and felt that you were right there in the room being a part of it all. And, thank you, Sheila for sharing this with us.]
