| "These are American treasures to me," smiles Marty Stuart on the ground floor of the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville. He's referring to his amazing collection of music artifacts -- instruments, clothing, personal letters, records and photographs -- that he'll be exhibiting at the Museum starting June 6 and running through November 11.
The exhibit, titled Sparkle & Twang: Marty Stuart's American Musical Odyssey, represents more than 40 years of collecting. Want to see a pair of Hank Williams' boots? Marty's got them. Or how about Johnny Cash's first black suit? He's got that, too. "These are the things that mean something to me," Marty declares. "They all helped shape what you and I know as country music." Marty is also releasing a new CD project in June, Compadres: An Anthology of Duets featuring his musical mentor Lester Flatt, Merle Haggard, Marty's wife Connie Smith, and others. "You can say that the album and the exhibit are both related in a way," Marty explains. "I hope that Sparkle & Twang will inspire young artists to be mindful of their heritage," Marty adds. "And for fans, I hope it inspires them to follow their hearts." By Bob Paxman Marty's Duets On June 5, Marty will release his anthology of duets, Compadres, an idea that came to him out of the blue. "I started looking at the people I had collaborated with over the years, and it was pretty staggering," says Marty. "So I cut a couple of fresh tracks, gathered up some photographs and put it together." Marty's "compadres" in music include Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and wife Connie Smith. "The record just seems to fit the moment,:" notes Marty. |
