Country music fans, set your DVRs: Merle Haggard is making a rare TV appearance Saturday night on the fifth season closer of RFD TV’s The Marty Stuart Show.

The half-hour music showcase anchored by Stuart and his rootsy Fabulous Superlatives ensemble is wrapping its fifth year on the rural lifestyle cabler with solid ratings growth. Haggard is a fitting finale guest star for the show that celebrates traditional country, folk and bluegrass greats as well as contempo stars such as Sheryl Crow and Iris DeMent.

“Merle Haggard’s appearances are treasured these days, perhaps more than ever before,” Stuart said.

“The very idea that he would come all the way from California to be a part of my show touches me. I know he watches and is a fan of the show.  Just knowing that makes me try harder and I believe Merle Haggard fans will cherish the performance he gave us,” he said.

RFD is determined to boost the profile of Stuart’s program, the anchor of its “Saturday Night Music Row” program block of tune-driven series. More than two dozen episodes of “Marty Stuart” will be rerun this summer on RFD’s sibling Family Net cabler starting July 13.

Stuart will also host an hour-long special from his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi on August 31 for RFD.
